Liner notes
in ''BRONZE RUSH''
¡¡¡¡Bronze is back. Bronze Sambe and his big, bad-ass sound have¡¡returned for a
second album, and this time he has some talented¡¡musicians to back him up.
Joining Bronze is composer and keyboardist¡¡m.you-ta, bassist Toru Nishikawa,
guitarist Takayuki Kubo and drummer¡¡Shigemasa Sakamoto.¡¡Together they complement
Bronze's big saxophone¡¡sound with straight-ahead rhythms and some sophisticated
solo work. ¡¡¡¡Sambe's second album is called Bronze Rush . All the songs on
the album are written and produced by Sambe. Bronze and his new band rock. ¡¡My
personal favorite, "Alley Cats,"sounds like an ode to a bunch of drunken guys,
but I could be¡¡mistaken. Those who listen to the song will start tapping their
feet when they hear these latest cuts. On stage, the attractive and petit
m.you-ta provides a kind of physical counterpoint to Bronze's massive frame.
¡¡ Bronze's ambition knows no bounds. A cut from his first album Be called
"Smuggler" was named Best Instrumental Song at the World Music Grand Prix. He
has high hopes for Bronze Rush too. From the hypnotic rhythms of the opening
cut, "Grasp," to the straight-ahead funk of other cuts, Bronze Rush is a special
album from a rising star whose beautiful wife is very happy that jazz is cutting
down his time at the track.

Liner notes
in ''BE''
Usually, people are not allowed to choose their own
nicknames. Nicknames stick because they somehow capture a person¡Çs personality
or quirks or secrets in a way that is usually a little too honest, a little too
brutal, for us to come up with by ourselves. Yasuhiko ¡ÈBronze¡É Sambe may be the
exception to this rule. He chose his own nickname —
Bronze — and it stuck in part because it hinted at his own weaknesses — who
shoots for third place, after all? — and in part because he insisted that we
call him that every time he was around. Eventually, Yasuhiko simply became
Bronze.
The first time I met Bronze,
we were in a bar on a US military base after a softball game. Over beers, he
regaled a bunch of Americans with tales of his sexual prowess. Not a typical
Japanese, I thought at the time. He asked us white Americans if we were afraid
to walk through Harlem . He asked about the genocide of native Americans.
Definitely not a typical Japanese.
The last time I saw him,
he took me to the boat races in Japan and explained the intricacies of betting
on them. We bet, won a few, lost a few and had a great time. He was the perfect
ambassador to this less talked about side of Japan .
Bronze is a big man by any
standard. The sound on this album suits the man. No-nonsense, funky and
iconoclastic. It¡Çs big and bold. Bronze has a hot-and-cold relationship with
both his home country and the US , which is exemplified by the fact that he is
searching for his own uniquely Japanese sound through the most American of music
mediums: jazz. Bronze is ambitious and follows his own path. He¡Çs the most
American Japanese man I¡Çve ever met, and I¡Çm guessing that he will not see that
as a compliment, although, in some way, it¡Çs meant as one.
